The A340, A330, 747, and 787 are all used

Lufthansa will use widebodies on five intra-Europe routes this summer: from its main hub of Frankfurt to Barcelona, Hamburg, Munich, Palma de Mallorca, and Paris CDG. The Airbus A330-300 and A340-300 are used, along with the Boeing 787-9 and 747-400. This is the latest schedule as of April 4th.

Five widebody intra-Europe routes

Lufthansa is no stranger to using twin aisles on short-haul flights. It has done it for years; for some withdrawn types, like the A300-600, it was a daily occurrence. Now it is different. Aside from crew training, they tend only to be used for special occasions or during periods of significant demand.

The table below lists all the German giant's scheduled intra-Europe widebody routes. Most, like Frankfurt to Palma, are already known and well-publicized, but they are worth summarizing. Curiously, nothing is planned past May 26th.

Lie flat for 45 minutes

Just 256 miles (412 km) apart, Frankfurt to Hamburg has a block time of 1 hour and 10 minutes. This includes taxi time at both ends, flight time, and time for short delays. The actual flight typically takes about 40 to 55 minutes. On five dates in May, Lufthansa will be using the 747-400 on the route, replacing the normal A319/A320/A321.

Its 747-400s have 371 seats in a three-class config. Depending on the layout, there are up to 67 in business (2-2 or 2-3-2), 32 in premium economy, and 272 in economy.

As with Palma, Lufthansa only sells tickets in the business and economy classes. It appears that the premium economy cabin is being sold as a preferred seating section in the economy cabin.

A one-way ticket in economy is available from €85 (USD$93) and lie-flat business from €472 ($515). As is often the case when flying to/from a hub, cheaper tickets can be found flying over (connecting through) the hub to somewhere else, especially (in this case) in business. Airlines offset lower fares via a hub with higher fares to the hub, where they are more dominant and have less competition.

Frankfurt to Hamburg

On the five dates in May, a 747-400 will leave Frankfurt at 06:30 and arrive in Hamburg at 07:40. After a 50-minute turn, it'll leave at 08:30 and return to Frankfurt at 09:40, ready for its long-haul deployment.

Will you fly a widebody on any of the five routes mentioned in the article?
